From the best-selling, critically acclaimed author of Namath and Pistol comes another remarkable biography: the life of Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini. In the early 1980s, Mancini was more than the lightweight champ. He was a national hero. Sinatra fawned over him. Warren Zevon wrote a tribute song. Sylvester Stallone produced his life story as a movie of the week. After all, an adoring public considered Boom Boom the real Rocky. Lenny Mancini - the original Boom Boom, as he was known - had been a lightweight contender himself before fragments of German mortar shell almost killed him in 1944. By winning the championship just as he vowed - for his wounded father - Ray produced his own feel-good fable for network television. But it all came apart in a brutal 1982 battle against an obscure Korean challenger. Deuk Koo Kim lost consciousness in the fourteenth round and died within days. Three months later, his despondent mother took her own life. The deaths would haunt Ray and ruin his image, turning boxing’s All-American Boy into a pariah. Now, 30 years later, Kriegel finally uncovers the story’s full dimensions, tracking the Mancini and Kim families across generations and excavating mysteries - from the killing of Mancini’s brother to the fate of Kim’s son. Even as the scenes move from Youngstown to New York, Las Vegas to Seoul, Reno to Hollywood, The Good Son remains an intimate history, a saga of fathers and fighters, loss and redemption. 1. These Trumbull County 911 recordings are real. There are no actors or re-enactments....and no names have been changed to protect the innocent. These recordings are those of the actual police radio dispatch, from the Trumbull county 911 center in northeastern Ohio. We have edited out any dead air space between transmissions, but have otherwise left the recordings unaltered. The incident occurred on December 14th 1994 at approximately 11 pm and lasted for over nine hours. Calls began to come into the Trumbull county 911 center, and local TV station WYTV Channel 33 in Youngstown, Ohio from concerned, and at times, frantic local residents. But the nature of these calls were anything but routine. Instead, callers reported seeing a large, luminous, saucer shaped object that made no sound, and hovered awfully low to the ground. They were certain it wasn't an airplane, helicopter, weather balloon, falling star, or....the planet Venus. Initially, the dispatch operator and officers on duty that evening, can be heard actually joking about the situation. However...the mood would soon become quite serious, as visual contact began to be confirmed by patrolman from several different stations, including The Howland and Liberty townships, as well as Hubbard, Girard and Trumbull County police departments. Officers described the UFO as a huge, brightly luminescent object, with multicolored pulsating lights, and lit up the sky, and lit up the ground below it in an erie red light, as if it were daylight. According to officers and residents, the object made no noise, and was seen hovering above houses and disturbingly low to the ground. 1. Language: English. Narrator: uncredited.
